Multiple sources now report that Georgia State is set to announce Monday that they will leave the Colonial Athletic Association for the Sun Belt Conference, starting in 2013. CBSSports.com and PantherTalk.com say that an official announcement is slated for 2 PM, Monday from the Georgia Dome in Atlanta.
The move comes as no real surprise, as it has been speculated for weeks that the Panthers would make the move to facilitate their fledgling football program to play at the FBS level. The move was also hastened by the coming vote within the CAA to increase the league’s exit fee from $250,000 to as much as $1 million.
PantherTalk.com stated, “Several Panther Athletic Club members have stated publicly that they have been contacted by the athletics department for an announcement that will be “life changing for the athletics department.””
Fans within the CAA generally feel that the move will open the door for a new southern region school to be invited to join the CAA, with College of Charleston, Coastal Carolina, Appalachian State and Stony Brook among those mentioned.
