Virginia Commonwealth's players, fans and athletic department are holding their collective breaths, in hopes that Head Coach Anthony Grant decides to spurn the Gators and not try to fill the shoes of Billy Donovon, who just bolted for the NBA's Orlando Magic.
What would you do if you were floor-General Grant?
We all know the scenario. You just got your shot to run your own ship. You did well, and took a team, a school, a city on a great ride through the first round of the NCAA tournament. You've got a great recruiting class coming in, and a burgeoning star in guard Eric Maynor. Everyone knows you're talented and an up-and-coming coach. You're building something from the foundation Jeff Capel built.
We all knew it would happen... sometime down the road.
Will leaving all that behind be enough to make him think once or twice before heading over to the defending back-to-back champs? Every major sports news site says it's inevitable.
The loss of Coach Grant to Florida will hurt the CAA, at least in the short-term. No telling what a five year stint at VCU would have done for the league and VCU. If Grant defects, VCU kisses goodbye statistically better chances at what could've been.... a sweet sixteen? an elite eight? a final four?
The silver lining on this cloud is that VCU A.D. Norwood Teague has the Villa 7 Consortium to lean on. A crop of assistant coaches who meet annually to talk shop, network and find jobs... sponsored by the VCU SportsCenter program. “It is a great opportunity for coaches and administrators to net-work in a neutral, relaxed en-vironment with no strings at-tached", said former AD Larry Sanders. "This is exactly where VCU first became acquainted with Coach Grant. When the position became available at VCU, we knew exactly who we wanted and we went out and got him.”
Rest assured Ram fans, VCU will find a very solid replacement for Grant - if he decides to go.
