From the Providence Journal’s Mike Stozak:
SOUTH KINGSTOWN — The University of Rhode Island is staying in the Colonial Athletic Association for football, athletics director Thorr Bjorn informed the team at a meeting Tuesday morning.
This was to be the Rams’ last season in the CAA, generally accepted as the most competitive conference in the Football Championship Subdivision (formerly known as Division I-AA). The Rams were set to join the Northeast Conference for the 2013 season, mostly to reduce anticipated travel expenses.
But Old Dominion, in Virginia, and Georgia State are moving up to the Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly known as Division I-A), and Albany and Stony Brook are joining the CAA, which reduces the travel cost concerns.
