Virginia Commonwealth’s valiant effort in Portland came up just short, as the Rams were unable to hold off a final surge from Indiana in a 63-61 loss. VCU’s HAVOC defense caused 22 Indiana turnovers but the Rams had a hard time scoring themselves – only 4 points in the last 12:30 of regulation.
Brad Burgess had a chance to put VCU up 5 with a minute to go, but missed two free throws and Victor Oladipo pushed up the court for a three-point play to tie the game. Following a baseline jumper from Will Sheehey that put the Hoosiers up 2 with 12 seconds left, Rob Brandenberg’s three-point attempt clanged off the rim as time expired.
