Celebrating SIDs…

By TheFeed  Published: 7th February 2012

You have no idea the quality of SIDs in this conference but hopefully I can give you a clue. I’ve done work with three other conferences this year and I can tell you the quality of work by the SIDs in the CAA–and from Rob Washburn in the conference office–is far superior to all of them.

So I want to take a moment to thank them for the stats and the side conversations. You should know they are the unsung heroes and fuel to this entire engine.

If you see them tomorrow or this weekend, don’t give them a hug–that would be awkward. But shake their hand and thank them for the outstanding job they do to make our #CAAHoops experience better. Everything in this entry belongs to them, not me.

We all benefit.

Here’s a stat pack worthy of your Tuesday. I have no idea what that means:

  • Drexel’s 11-game win streak is the fifth-longest in the nation currently and the best for the Dragons since 2005-06. VCUs nine-game streak is the ninth-longest in the nation.
  • The CAA and the Mountain West are the only two conferences to have three teams with 19 or more wins this season through games of Feb. 5. VCU (20), Drexel (19) and George Mason (19) have hit the mark in the CAA, while UNLV, San Diego State and New Mexico have reached it in the MWC.
  • Frantz Massenat was 21-of-21 at the free throw line last week and has now made 33 in a row from the charity stripe, which is tied for the sixth-longest streak in CAA history and is one short of the Drexel record. The CAA consecutive FT record is 45, set by VCUs Willie Taylor in 2001-02.
  • Eric Buckner became the GSUs all-time leader in blocked shots with 129, despite playing less than two seasons with the Panthers. Buckner leads the CAA and ranks seventh nationally this season with 80 rejections, which is just one away from the GSU single-season mark.
  • Drexel leads the nation (25.9%) in three-point FG% defense.
  • VCU ranks fourth in the nation with 9.9 steals per game, GSU is fifth (9.6 spg) and ODU is seventh (9.4 spg). VCU is also fourth in turnover margin (+5.4 tpg).
  • The defensive numbers posted by CAA teams have been even more impressive during conference play. Four teams are holding their opponents to under 58 points per game – Drexel (52.8 ppg), Georgia State (54.8 ppg), Old Dominion (55.7 ppg) and VCU (57.3 ppg).
  • Conversely, no CAA teams are averaging more than 68.2 ppg offensively in conference play. Six teams are also limiting opponents to 40% FG shooting or less in CAA play: GSU (35.4%), Drexel (37.3%), ODU (37.4%), Mason (38.4%), VCU (39.5%) and Delaware (39.8%).
  • Samme Givens moved up to ninth place on the CAAs all-time rebounding list last Saturday. With 946 boards, he needs just 54 more to become the sixth player in CAA history to reach 1,000 career rebounds.
  • Kent Bazemore moved into seventh place on the CAAs career steals list with 229, passing UNCWs John Goldsberry. He needs three more to move into a tie for sixth place.
  • Robert Nwankwo moved up to eighth on the CAAs all-time blocked shots list with 213 on Saturday and is just six away from the #7 spot.
  • Bradford Burgess has made 135 consecutive starts, which is the longest active streak in Division I basketball and is the VCU and CAA all-time record. With eight more starts, Burgess would pass Patrick Ewing’s record of 142 straight starts at Georgetown.
  • Delaware freshman Jarvis Threatt scored 14 points off the bench at JMU and is averaging 13.2 ppg over his last six contests.
  • Drexel has held its past 13 opponents to just 50.5 ppg. All have scored less than 60 points.
  • Drexel is shooting 47.2% from the floor and 43.9% from three over the past six games. The Dragons are also shooting 80.7% from the FT line over the past five contests.
  • Four of GSU’s five CAA losses this season have been by three points or less.
  • GSU ranks in the top 10 nationally in scoring defense (57.8 ppg) and FG% defense (37.6%). They have limited their CAA foes to 54.8 ppg and 35.4% FG shooting
  • GSU has clinched its first winning season since 2003-04 and its eight CAA victories are tied for the most ever.
  • Rashaad Richardson scored 22 points last week after scoring only 21 points in the past 12 games.
  • Donte Morales averaged 12.0 ppg last week and has five double-figure efforts in the last seven games. He’s averaging 11.0 ppg over the stretch.
  • VCU has reached the 20-win mark for the sixth straight season.
  • Juvonte Reddic scored a team-high 20 points at W&M and posted his fourth double-double (11pts/11reb) vs. NU. In CAA play, Reddic is averaging 12.8 ppg and 8.0 rpg while shooting 53.7% from the floor.
  • Troy Daniels hit 9-of-18 threes and averaged 15.5 ppg last week. He’s made 69 treys this season, which is tied for the CAA lead.
  • Freshman Briante Weber leads the CAA with 2.4 spg and leads the nation in steals per minute.
  • #Beasthoven scored 16 points at UNCW and had 10 rebounds vs. VCU. He’s averaging 11.0 ppg and 7.0 rpg over the last seven games.
