Outlook: The Patriots dodged scares at home in the past two outings to retain first place in the Colonial Athletic Association, one game ahead of Virginia Commonwealth, Drexel and Old Dominion. Coach Paul Hewitt is eager to return to the road, where his team has won four of five. “For some reason, we are playing more efficiently on the road,” he said. “I guess maybe we are concerned because we don’t have the home crowds, so we lock in a little more. I’m looking forward to getting them out of here.” Hewitt and seven players are from the New York area, including senior F Ryan Pearson, who averaged 20.5 points and 8.5 rebounds in his two previous visits to Hofstra. George Mason’s back court has lacked consistency, but a different guard has risen in recent games: Bryon Allen’s career-high 17 points vs. UNC Wilmington,Sherrod Wright’s 22 off the bench vs. Towson, reserve Vaughn Gray’s career-best 19 at James Madison and Vertrail Vaughns’s 17 vs. Georgia State. Senior G Mike Moore is scoring a CAA-high 19.4 ppg for Hofstra, which has lost seven of eight, most by close margins.
