Kyle V’s Post Game Report

By TheFeed  Published: 28th November 2010

Recap: Mason defeated the Florida Atlantic University Owl’s 66-51 in convincing fashion on Saturday as the Patriots improved to 4-2 on the season. Mason got a balanced effort from its starting five, with four players in double figures. Mike Morrison’s big second half (14 points) helped Mason take this one running away. Luke Hancock had himself another great night for the Patriots, tallying 7 assists and 6 rebounds to go with his 14 points. Florida Atlantic, a team averaging 76 PPG was held to just 51 on 37.7% shooting thanks to Mason’s lock down defense. Breakdown: Mason looked pretty good. They shared the ball well with 17 total assists in the game and limited turnovers. Mike Morrison continued to show off his developing post-game and had a huge second half that really demoralized FAU. FAU’s starting F Brett Royster was the Sun Belt Conference’s Defensive Player of the Year last year so seeing Morrison dominate the post was impressive. People who didn’t see the game may look at the stats and think that Mason gave up a lot of 3 pointer shots, similar to the Harvard game. Not true. Most of those attempts were forced up by FAU Guard Greg Gantt who, in my opinion, had no business taking those shots. The perimeter D was a step above what we saw earlier this year and didn’t feel like a weakness for the team. Rebounding on the other hand continues to be a problem. Mason won the rebounding effort on paper but not in practice. Mason failed to come down with a lot of easy rebounds they should have. Luckily FAU failed to fully capitalize on the many offensive rebounds they got. This could be a huge issue against teams with an offensive post presence. Finally, I want to take a moment to talk about Ryan Pearson. There were rumblings in the blogosphere earlier this year that he was not developing as he should be and that he was still very immature. There was a point in the second half when FAU began to rally and momentum began to shift. Pearson stepped up and crushed the uprising. Pearson not only set an example with his hustle but was a vocal general on the court. Later, when Pearson got called for a VERY questionable foul, he was clearly upset but instead of slamming the ball and losing his cool, he walked away from the refs and calmed down. Pearson’s grown up, plain and simple.
